The need for the warmth and light of the sun to fully filter into a space, enhanced by bold yet warm colors, is typical for a Swedish country home’s interior. Diana has achieved this by using a warm color on her walls as well as leaving her windows open and bare to capture the maximum amount of light.

The home’s interior was all dressed with traditional Swedish folk painting; doors were combed with yellow paint, patterned in wavy, parallel designs. Denim was the selected gasket material (rather than mortar) for the seal between the length of the logs. The walls had been framed with 2 x 4s laid flat; these were notched into the logs on their irregular inside to make them plumb for superbly flat walls on the inside and were then paneled. Outside, the logs were hewn so smooth that 2 x 4s were easily nailed flat to the logs before adding a layer of 4-inch cedar lap siding, which minimized heat loss and protected the house logs from the elements. David reports that “the cabin was lived in for decades before the family stopped improving the home, and eventually built a bigger home. Fueled by the love of family, the time-consuming creative hard work was done in tribute to their loved ones as well as to the natural, indigenous material which had recently become available from a relatively new item to the area: a circular sawmill. The house was likely painted as was common throughout history in Swedish folk tradition, by its owners in the winter while farmwork allowed some time for work at home.”

Diana Beattie, known as the interior designer who loves collecting old buildings, has saved and restored many wonderful log and hewn barns and historic homesteads for her clients. She creates whimsical and very detailed homesteads that are not only beautiful structurally, but also artfully restored to the very last detail. Diana’s talent naturally comes to her, and so when you visit one of the homes that she has designed, you are amazed that she has addressed and ingeniously presented detail beyond your imagination.

The warmth of Swedish ochre combined with this American four-poster bed creates a rustic partnership that is both inviting and comfortable.
